The Constitution of Antigua and Barbuda took effect on 1 November 1981, the day the country gained independence, and serves as the supreme law governing the country. It establishes a parliamentary monarchy with three branches: an executive headed by the King and represented locally by a Governor-General and Prime Minister, a legislature made up of a Senate and House of Representatives, and a judiciary. The constitution is unitary rather than federal, and it superseded the country's earlier constitution as a British Associated State upon independence.
