The Constitution of the Republic of Bulgaria was adopted on 12 July 1991 by the 7th Grand National Assembly, establishing Bulgaria as a unitary parliamentary republic. It is the fourth constitution in Bulgarian history, following the Tarnovo Constitution of 1879, the Dimitrov Constitution of 1947 to 1971, and the Zhivkov Constitution of 1971 to 1991. It divides government among the Council of Ministers, which holds executive power, the National Assembly, which holds legislative power, and the courts, with the president serving a largely ceremonial arbitrating and commander-in-chief role. It has been amended six times, in 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2015 and 2023, designates Bulgarian as the official language, and recognizes Eastern Orthodox Christianity as a traditional religion while mandating separation of church and state.
