Constitution of Uganda

Uganda's fourth constitution was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on 27 September 1995 and promulgated on 8 October 1995, replacing the 1967 constitution, which had been repeatedly suspended during its 28-year existence, following a consultative process led by the Uganda Constitutional Commission established in 1988. It creates a unitary presidential republic with a unicameral Parliament, a presidency and a judiciary anchored by the Supreme Court, and it introduced checks on executive power absent from its predecessor, including parliamentary approval of ministerial appointments and government borrowing and independent oversight commissions; it has since been amended four times, most recently in January 2018.
