The Constitution of the Gambia is the supreme law of the Republic of the Gambia. The current text was approved in 1996 and came into effect in January 1997, replacing the 1970 constitution that had been suspended after a 1994 military coup, and it establishes a presidential system with a unicameral legislature, an independent judiciary, and constitutional protection of human rights.
