The Constitution of Liberia came into force on 6 January 1986, replacing the Liberian Constitution of 1847 that had governed the country since its independence. It serves as the supreme law of the Republic of Liberia and, like its predecessor, establishes a system of government heavily modeled on the federal government of the United States, with executive, legislative and judicial branches.
