Robert Ferdinand Wagner lived from 1877 to 1953 and was an American attorney and Democratic Party politician who represented New York in the United States Senate from 1927 to 1949. Born in Prussia, he immigrated to the United States with his family in 1885, graduated from New York Law School, and rose through the New York State Legislature to become Democratic leader of the New York State Senate before serving as a justice of the New York Supreme Court and then winning election to the U.S. Senate in 1926. As a senator he became a leader of the New Deal Coalition and a close associate of President Franklin D. Roosevelt, sponsoring three major laws: the National Labor Relations Act of 1935, known as the Wagner Act, the Social Security Act of 1935, and the Housing Act of 1937. He resigned from the Senate in 1949 due to ill health.
