The superior trial court of the Judiciary of New York, established in the Province of New York on May 6, 1691 and vested with unlimited civil and criminal jurisdiction. New York is the only state where "supreme court" names a trial court rather than a court of last resort, which in New York is the Court of Appeals; the Supreme Court is established in each of New York's sixty-two counties. The New York County (Manhattan) branch of the court, presided over by Justice Charles J. Tejada, vacated the convictions of the five defendants in the Central Park jogger case in December 2002.
