Law of Paraguay

The National Constitution of Paraguay mandates a separation of powers among three branches, with a judiciary made up of tribunals and courts of civil law and a nine member Supreme Court of Justice, independent of the executive and legislature. Paraguay operated under civil law through decades of dictatorial rule by Alfredo Stroessner and the Colorado Party until his ouster in 1989 began a process of democratization, and the country today functions as a presidential representative democracy still shaped by long Colorado Party control of the state.
