Frequently Asked Questions

Was Orrin Hatch the longest-serving Republican in the United States Senate?

Yes, until Chuck Grassley surpassed his 42 years of service in 2023.

For a time he was. Hatch served as a senator from Utah from 1977 to 2019, a tenure of 42 years, which made him the longest-serving Republican senator in history when he overtook Ted Stevens. That record stood until Chuck Grassley surpassed him in 2023. Over those years Hatch also chaired the Senate Judiciary Committee, from 1995 to 2001 and again from 2003 to 2005, which is the committee that handles federal judicial nominations.
