Orrin Grant Hatch lived from 1934 to 2022 and was an American attorney and politician who served as a United States senator from Utah from 1977 to 2019, a 42 year tenure that made him the longest serving Republican senator in history until Chuck Grassley surpassed him in 2023. He chaired the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions from 1981 to 1987, served as chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee from 1995 to 2001 and again from 2003 to 2005, became president pro tempore of the Senate in January 2015, and chaired the Senate Finance Committee from 2015 to 2019, where he led efforts to pass the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017.
