John Sidney McCain III lived from August 29, 1936 to August 25, 2018 and was an American politician and naval officer who represented Arizona in Congress for over thirty-five years, first in the House of Representatives from 1983 to 1987 and then in the Senate from 1987 until his death. A member of the Republican Party, he was its presidential nominee in the 2008 election. A former naval aviator held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam from 1967 to 1973, he later made regulating the financing of political campaigns one of his signature concerns, which resulted in the McCain-Feingold Act of 2002, co-authored with Russ Feingold; the two received the 1999 John F.
