John McCain

John Sidney McCain III lived from August 29, 1936 to August 25, 2018 and was an American politician and naval officer who represented Arizona in Congress for over thirty-five years, first in the House of Representatives from 1983 to 1987 and then in the Senate from 1987 until his death. A member of the Republican Party, he was its presidential nominee in the 2008 election. A former naval aviator held as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam from 1967 to 1973, he later made regulating the financing of political campaigns one of his signature concerns, which resulted in the McCain-Feingold Act of 2002, co-authored with Russ Feingold; the two received the 1999 John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for their work on the law. He chaired the Senate Commerce Committee and later the Senate Armed Services Committee, and belonged to the bipartisan Gang of Fourteen that helped resolve a crisis over judicial nominations.
