The legal system of Venezuela belongs to the Continental Law tradition. The 1999 Constitution replaced the traditional three branch government with a five branch structure, adding electoral and citizens branches alongside the executive, legislative, and judicial branches. Venezuela was the first country in the world to abolish capital punishment for all crimes, doing so in 1863, and its criminal procedure has since moved from the 1926 Code of Criminal Proceedings to the 1998 Organic Code of Criminal Procedure.
