Alexandre de Moraes

Alexandre de Moraes was born on December 13, 1968 and is a Brazilian jurist, former politician, former president of Brazils Superior Electoral Court, and a justice of the Supreme Federal Court. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Michel Temer in 2017 while serving as Minister of Justice and Public Security, having previously served as Secretary for Public Security in the state of Sao Paulo and as a member of the Brazilian Public Prosecutors Office. From around 2020 he drew wide public attention in Brazil and abroad for judicial orders including arrests, search warrants and the termination of social media accounts of individuals and groups suspected of planning coups or spreading disinformation, along with temporary nationwide blocks of platforms including Telegram and Twitter for noncompliance with Brazilian court orders. His tenure as president of the Superior Electoral Court, his actions during the 2022 Brazilian general election, and his rulings following the January 2023 Brazilian Congress attack made him a target of both strong support and strong criticism. In July 2025 the United States State Department imposed an entry ban on Moraes and other Supreme Court justices, and the United States Treasury Department later imposed sanctions under the Magnitsky Act, which the Trump administration removed that December.
