Law of Malta

Mixed and Hybrid Legal Systems

The law of Malta blends continental law, common law and local tradition, including the historic Code de Rohan. A municipal code enacted in 1784 was replaced in 1813, and Maltese law has evolved over the centuries to reflect the rule of successive periods. Malta today has a mixed-system codification shaped by Roman law, the French Napoleonic Code, English common law, European Union law, international law and locally established custom.
