Roman Herzog was a German politician, judge and legal scholar who served as President of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany from 1987 to 1994, having joined the court as a judge in 1983, and who then served as President of Germany from 1 July 1994 to 30 June 1999, the first German head of state elected after reunification. Born on 5 April 1934 in Landshut, Bavaria, he earlier held an academic career as a law professor and served in ministerial posts in the state government of Baden-Wurttemberg. He died on 10 January 2017 in Bad Mergentheim.
