Konrad Hesse lived from January 29, 1919 to March 15, 2005 and was a German jurist who served from 1975 to 1987 as a justice of the Federal Constitutional Court. Born in Konigsberg, East Prussia, he obtained his doctorate in 1950 and habilitated in 1955 at the University of Gottingen, with his habilitation covering state, administration and canon law. He received his first ordinary professorship in 1965 at the University of Freiburg, and from 1961 to 1975 also worked as a judge at the Supreme Administrative Court in Baden-Wurttemberg. As a judge at the Federal Constitutional Court, a member of its first senate, he coined the term the right to informational self-determination in connection with the 1983 census judgement, and to resolve clashes between civil rights he produced the concept of practical concordance. From 2003 he was a member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
