Why was Lionel Murphy such a divisive figure?
He was called the most divisive figure in the history of the Senate.
The Senate biography of Murphy calls him the most divisive figure in the history of the Senate. It records that opponents regarded him as dangerous, reckless and lacking in fundamental political nous. His later years on the High Court were also clouded by inquiries: in September 1984 a second Senate committee was set up to investigate an allegation against him, and the following month a Senate select committee was set up to investigate the authenticity of transcripts.
