Abdul Hameed Dogar

Modern Constitutional and Supreme Court Judges of Asia and Oceania

Abdul Hameed Dogar (born 22 March 1944 in Khairpur district, Sindh) served as Chief Justice of Pakistan from 3 November 2007 to 21 March 2009. He was appointed by President Pervez Musharraf after the 2007 emergency, taking the oath under the Provisional Constitutional Order after Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry refused to do so, and was one of only four sitting judges who immediately accepted the PCO oath. Following the restoration of democratic rule in 2009, Pakistan's Supreme Court ruled that the PCO oath had not been legal and that Dogar had held only de facto rather than constitutional status as Chief Justice; his roughly sixteen month tenure ended with his retirement coinciding with Chaudhry's reinstatement.
