Edwin Cameron

Edwin Cameron (born 15 February 1953, in Pretoria) is a South African judge who served as a Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa from 2009 to 2019, after serving as a judge of the Supreme Court of Appeal from 2000 to 2008 and of the Witwatersrand Local Division from 1995 to 2000. He is recognized for landmark judgments on free speech and defamation law, including Glenister v President, which struck down amendments to anti-corruption legislation and required an adequately independent corruption-fighting agency, and the Liquor Bill judgment, the only case ever referred to the Constitutional Court by a South African president under the relevant constitutional provision. Nelson Mandela described him as one of South Africa new heroes for his HIV/AIDS activism and LGBTIQ+ rights advocacy; he remains the only senior South African official to have publicly disclosed living with HIV. He has served as Chancellor of Stellenbosch University since 2020 and as Inspecting Judge of Correctional Services since 2020.
