Sophia Akuffo served as the thirteenth Chief Justice of Ghana from June 2017 to December 2019, capping nearly twenty-five years on the Supreme Court after her appointment by President Jerry Rawlings in November 1995 following about two decades in private legal practice. She was elected a judge of the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights in 2006, later serving as its vice-president and president, and she earned her law degree from the University of Ghana, qualified as a barrister in 1975, and later completed a master of laws degree at Harvard. After retiring from the bench she chaired Ghana's COVID-19 National Trust Fund and now chairs the Governing Council of the University of Ghana.
