Sisi Khampepe

Sisi Khampepe (born 8 January 1957, in Soweto) is a South African judge who served as a Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa from 2009 to 2021, after earlier serving as a judge of the High Court from 2000 to 2009 and of the Labour Appeal Court from 2007 to 2009. A former labour lawyer, she wrote her most significant ruling in June 2021, sentencing former President Jacob Zuma to fifteen months imprisonment for contempt of court, the first time the Constitutional Court had imprisoned someone for that offense, holding that Zuma had left the court with no real choice. Her other landmark decisions include Teddy Bear Clinic v Minister of Justice, which decriminalized consensual sexual acts between minors, and Mankayi v AngloGold Ashanti, which allowed mineworkers with occupational lung disease to pursue civil claims against their employers. Chief Justice Raymond Zondo praised her jurisprudence on the rights of women, children and other vulnerable people. She has been Chancellor of the University of Pretoria since 2022.
