Laurie Ackermann (14 January 1934 to 25 May 2024) was a South African judge who was one of the five inaugural justices appointed by President Nelson Mandela to the Constitutional Court of South Africa, serving from August 1994 to January 2004. He practiced as an advocate at the Pretoria Bar from 1958 to 1980, took silk in 1975, and served as a judge of the Transvaal Provincial Division from 1980 to 1987. He was later a professor of human rights law at Stellenbosch University, a judge of the Lesotho Court of Appeal, an acting judge on the Namibian Supreme Court, and a judge of the Cape Provincial Division before his Constitutional Court appointment. He played a central role in developing the Constitutional Court early jurisprudence on human dignity and its relationship to equality and non-discrimination, authoring landmark judgments on sexual-orientation discrimination that set the precedent for the later legalisation of same-sex marriage in South Africa.
