Steven Majiedt

Steven Majiedt (born 18 December 1960, in Kenhardt, Cape Province) is a South African judge who has served as a Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa since 2019, appointed by President Cyril Ramaphosa. He practiced as an advocate in Cape Town from 1984 to 1995, focusing on public law and apartheid-era legislation, and served as Chief Provincial State Law Adviser for the Northern Cape from 1996 to 2000 before becoming a judge of the Northern Cape High Court in 2000 and of the Supreme Court of Appeal in 2010. In 2015 he sat on the Supreme Court of Appeal panel that overturned Oscar Pistorius culpable homicide conviction and found him guilty of murder instead. At the Constitutional Court he authored the unanimous judgment in National Commissioner of the South African Police Service v Southern African Human Rights Litigation Centre, holding that the South African Police Service was obliged to investigate credible allegations of torture by Zimbabwean police, a landmark ruling on universal jurisdiction over crimes against humanity. He also wrote majority judgments in Cool Ideas v Hubbard and Qwelane v South African Human Rights Commission.
