Richard Goldstone

Richard Joseph Goldstone, born in 1938 near Johannesburg, is a retired South African judge who practiced commercial and intellectual property law before his appointment to the bench. He served on the Transvaal Provincial Division of the Supreme Court of South Africa from 1980 to 1989, on its Appellate Division from 1990 to 1994, and then on the newly created Constitutional Court of South Africa from 1994 to 2003, where as a judge under apartheid he had already issued rulings that restricted evictions under the Group Areas Act. He chaired the Goldstone Commission investigating political violence during South Africa's transition to democracy from 1991 to 1994, and served as the first chief prosecutor of the United Nations war crimes tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda from 1994 to 1996. He later led a United Nations fact finding mission into the 2008-2009 conflict in Gaza.
