Moshe Landau

Modern Constitutional and Supreme Court Judges of Africa and the Middle East

Moshe Landau served on the Supreme Court of Israel from 1953 to 1982, becoming its fifth president from 1980 to 1982, after starting his judicial career as a magistrate in Haifa in 1940 and moving to the district court in 1948. He presided over the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann, conducting the proceedings with what historians have described as an objective and stately manner, and he later headed the 1987 Landau Commission investigating the interrogation methods of Israel's domestic intelligence service. He was known for championing civil rights while opposing judicial activism, and Aharon Barak, his successor as a leading figure on the court, called him one of the founders of Israeli law; he received the Israel Prize for law in 1991.
