Meir Shamgar served as President of the Supreme Court of Israel from 1983 to 1995, after earlier serving as the Israel Defense Forces' Military Advocate General from 1961 and as Attorney General of Israel from 1968 to 1975. Born in Danzig in 1925, he immigrated to Palestine in 1939 and was active in the Irgun and the Palmach, for which he was arrested by British authorities in 1944 and studied law by correspondence with the University of London while detained in Eritrea. After retiring from the Supreme Court he chaired the 1996 commission of inquiry into the assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and received the Israel Prize in 1996 for his contribution to society; he died in October 2019.
