Edward Akufo-Addo

Edward Akufo-Addo (1906-1979) was a Ghanaian lawyer and politician, one of the 'Big Six' founding figures of Ghana's independence movement, who served as a Supreme Court justice from 1962 to 1964 and as Chief Justice of Ghana from 1966 to 1970. As Chief Justice he chaired the Constitutional Commission that drafted Ghana's 1969 Second Republican Constitution; as a Supreme Court justice he had earlier taken part in the treason trials following the Kulungugu bomb attack and was dismissed along with fellow judges after acquitting some of the accused. He went on to serve as Ghana's ceremonial President from 1970 to 1972 during the Second Republic, an office distinct from his judicial career, and was the father of Nana Akufo-Addo, who later became Ghana's executive President.
