Pashtunwali, also spelled Pakhtunwali, is the traditional customary code of the Pashtun people, often translated as the way of the Pashtuns or the code of life. It functioned as the primary body of law and honor governing Pashtun society before the arrival of Islam and continues to shape conduct in Pashtun-majority regions of Afghanistan and Pakistan today. The code addresses hospitality, refuge, revenge and personal honor, and operates alongside, and at times in tension with, both Islamic law and the formal state legal systems of the countries where Pashtuns live.
