Legal Philosophy and Jurisprudence

Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Harun ibn Yazid al-Baghdadi, better known as Abu Bakr al-Khallal (died 311 AH, 923 CE), was a medieval Muslim jurist of the Hanbali school active in Mesopotamia during the Islamic Golden Age. He was instrumental in establishing Hanbali jurisprudence as an independent legal tradition, systematically gathering the teachings and legal opinions of Ahmad ibn Hanbal into a collection that eventually reached twenty volumes. The historian al-Dhahabi noted that before al-Khallal there was no independent school built on Ahmad ibn Hanbal own texts, and the later jurist Ibn Badran described al-Khallal collection as the root of the Hanbali school from which all later books of Hanbali jurisprudence sprang.
