Hincmar (806 to 21 December 882) was a Frankish ecclesiastical and legal scholar who served as Archbishop of Reims from 845 until his death, acting as a close advisor to the Carolingian king Charles the Bald. A prolific writer on canon law and ecclesiastical governance, he authored De iure metropolitanorum on the rights and authority of metropolitan bishops, De ordine palatii on palace administration, and treatises addressing marital law and predestination. His legal writings on episcopal jurisdiction and royal authority made him one of the most influential canon lawyers of the Carolingian period.
