Nicaragua v United States, formally Military and Paramilitary Activities in and against Nicaragua, was a 1986 judgment of the International Court of Justice holding that the United States had violated international law by supporting Contra rebels fighting the Nicaraguan government and by mining Nicaraguan harbors, rejecting the United States' argument that its actions were justified as collective self defence, and ordering the United States to pay reparations. The United States had withdrawn from the Court's compulsory jurisdiction shortly before the merits judgment, refused to participate further in the proceedings, and vetoed subsequent United Nations Security Council resolutions calling on it to comply with the ruling.
