Wolfgang Gaston Friedmann was a German American legal scholar who lived from 25 January 1907 to 20 September 1972 and specialized in international law. Born in Berlin, he later held academic posts at the University of Melbourne from 1947 to 1950 and the University of Toronto Law School from 1950 to 1955 before joining the faculty of Columbia Law School in 1955, where he founded the Columbia Journal of Transnational Law. His major works include The Changing Structure of International Law, published in 1967, and The Future of the Oceans, published in 1971. Following his death in 1972 the Wolfgang Friedmann Memorial Award was established in his honor.
