William Schabas, born in 1950, is a Canadian legal academic specializing in international criminal law and human rights law. He is a professor of international law at Middlesex University in the United Kingdom and professor of international humanitarian law and human rights at Leiden University in the Netherlands, and he is the author of more than eighteen monographs and over 350 academic articles on genocide, the death penalty and international human rights. He served as a commissioner on the Sierra Leone Truth and Reconciliation Commission, headed a 2014 United Nations committee investigating Israel role in the Gaza conflict before resigning in February 2015 over conflict of interest allegations tied to prior legal work for the Palestine Liberation Organization, and represented Myanmar before the International Court of Justice in 2019 in genocide allegations concerning the Rohingya population. He is an Officer of the Order of Canada and a member of the Royal Irish Academy.
