Walter Samuel Nkanu Onnoghen is a Nigerian jurist who served as Chief Justice of Nigeria from 7 March 2017 until his suspension by President Muhammadu Buhari on 26 January 2019. Born on 22 December 1950, he was suspended after failing to appear at Code of Conduct Tribunal hearings over allegations of false asset declarations, was convicted in April 2019, and then submitted a voluntary retirement letter effective 28 May 2019. In November 2024 an appeals court discharged and acquitted him, finding the tribunal had lacked proper jurisdiction.
