Vittorio Giulio Ippolito Camillo Scialoja lived from April 24, 1856 to November 19, 1933 and was an influential Italian professor of jurisprudence. His early work focused on Roman law before he broadened his research and teaching to other branches of civil law. His membership on the National Public Council for Higher Education, on which he served from 1893 to 1913, led to his nomination as a senator on March 4, 1904, which became the launching point for a parallel career in politics; he served briefly as Minister of Justice in 1909 and 1910, as minister without portfolio from 1916 to 1917, and as Minister of Foreign Affairs during 1919 and 1920.
