Vacarius was an Italian canon lawyer and legal scholar born around 1120 who died around 1200, the exact date uncertain. He authored the Liber Pauperum, a nine-volume compendium of Roman law that served as a leading textbook at the University of Oxford between 1190 and 1220. He is regarded as the first known teacher of Roman law in England, and his work introducing Roman and canon law studies to Oxford shaped the development of academic legal education there for generations after his lifetime.
