Ugo Mattei (born 1961) is an Italian legal scholar known for his comparative law scholarship and his work on the legal theory of the commons, for which he won the 2017 Elinor Ostrom Award for Collective Governance of the Commons. A professor of civil law at the University of Turin and emeritus professor at UC Hastings College of the Law, he co-wrote Plunder: When the Rule of Law Is Illegal with anthropologist Laura Nader and The Ecology of Law with physicist Fritjof Capra, and wrote the Italian bestseller Beni Comuni, arguing against the commodification of shared resources.
