Thomas Eichelbaum (1931-2018) was a New Zealand jurist who served as the eleventh Chief Justice of New Zealand from 1989 to 1999. Born in Konigsberg, Germany, his family emigrated to Wellington in 1938 to escape persecution, and he became a naturalised New Zealand citizen in 1946 and earned his law degree from Victoria University in 1954. He was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1978, served as President of the New Zealand Law Society from 1980 to 1982, and became a High Court judge in 1982 before his appointment as Chief Justice a decade later. After retiring in 1999 he chaired the Royal Commission on Genetic Modification and conducted a ministerial inquiry into the Peter Ellis case, and he died in Wellington in 2018.
