Theresia Degener was born on April 10, 1961 in Altenberge, West Germany and is a jurist and professor of law at the Protestant University for Applied Sciences of the Rheinland-Westfalen-Lippe. She is well known as an outspoken victim of the Contergan scandal, the thalidomide tragedy that caused thousands of babies worldwide to be born with malformed limbs after the drug was marketed in West Germany from 1957 as a mild sleeping aid. She is a lead activist for the rights of persons with disabilities, serves as Chairperson of the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, and is a member of the Human Rights Initiative Advisory Board of the Open Society Foundation.
