Theophilus was a law teacher in Constantinople and a contemporary of the Byzantine emperor Justinian the First in the early sixth century. Working under the supervision of the jurist Tribonian between 533 and around 565, he collaborated with the jurist Dorotheus in drafting the Institutes of Justinian, the introductory legal textbook that became part of the Corpus Juris Civilis, the great codification of Roman law. Sources give little further biographical detail about him beyond this one collaboration.
