Sylvia Helena de Figueiredo Steiner, born 19 January 1953 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, graduated from the Law School of the University of Sao Paulo and studied at the University of Brasilia. She served as a Federal Public Prosecutor in Sao Paulo from 1982 to 1995 and was appointed a judge of the Tribunal Regional Federal da 3a Regiao, a federal court based in Sao Paulo, in 1995. Nominated by Brazil, she served as a judge of the International Criminal Court from 11 March 2003 to 6 July 2016, and from 2005 to 2016 presided over the trial chamber in the case of Jean-Pierre Bemba, involving crimes of sexual violence committed in war, which produced the first case in which the Court found a high official directly responsible for crimes committed by his subordinates before the conviction was later overturned on appeal.
