Sudhi Ranjan Das (1894 to 1977) was the fifth Chief Justice of India, serving from February 1956 to September 1959. Born in Calcutta, he was one of Rabindranath Tagore's first four pupils at Patha Bhavana in Santiniketan and later studied law at University College London before being called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1918. He rose through the Calcutta High Court and the Chief Justiceship of the Punjab High Court before joining the Supreme Court of India in 1950, and as Chief Justice he administered the oath of office to President Rajendra Prasad in 1957.
