Sir Stephen John Sedley served as a Lord Justice of Appeal in the Court of Appeal of England and Wales from 1999 to 2011, following his appointment as a High Court judge in 1992 and earlier practice at the Cloisters chambers after being called to the bar in 1964. He is recognized for advancing administrative law and judicial review, championing legitimate expectation as a ground for review and a duty on public bodies to give reasons, and for contributions recognizing privacy as a human right as well as to employment, immigration, and free speech law. After retiring from the bench he became a visiting professor at Oxford.
