Shirani Bandaranayake is a Sri Lankan jurist who in 1996 became the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and who served as the 43rd Chief Justice of Sri Lanka from May 2011 until her controversial impeachment and removal by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in January 2013; the impeachment was later ruled unlawful, and she briefly resumed the office on 28 January 2015 before retiring the next day. Before her judicial career she was an academic at the University of Colombo, holding senior positions including associate professor of law and dean of its Faculty of Law.
