Shihab al-Din al-Qarafi was a Sunni Islamic scholar of Sanhaja Berber origin who lived in Ayyubid and Mamluk Egypt. He is widely regarded as the foremost Maliki jurisconsult and legal theoretician of his time, also skilled in scriptural exegesis, theology, grammar and other sciences. Contemporaries counted him among the three best scholars in Egypt, alongside Ibn al-Munayyir and Ibn Daqiq al-Id, and the scholar al-Suyuti listed him among those who reached the rank of mujtahid mutlaq, a jurist qualified to derive independent legal rulings.
