Sharad Arvind Bobde, born in 1956 in Nagpur to a family of lawyers spanning several generations, served as the forty seventh Chief Justice of India from November 2019 to April 2021. He enrolled as an advocate in 1978, became a Senior Advocate in 1998, and served as a judge of the Bombay High Court and Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court before joining the Supreme Court in 2013. During his roughly seventeen month tenure as Chief Justice he presided over the Ayodhya land dispute verdict, and he became the only Chief Justice of India not to recommend a single judge for Supreme Court appointment during his time in office.
