Salma Sobhan, born Rasheda Akhtar Banu on August 11, 1937, and who died on December 30, 2003, was a Bangladeshi lawyer, academic and human rights activist who in 1959 became the first woman barrister in Pakistan, in the territory that later became Bangladesh in 1971. She taught on the law faculty at the University of Dhaka, co-founded the national human rights watchdog Ain-o-Salish Kendra, and played a leading role at the Bangladesh Institute of Law and International Affairs.
