Sabyasachi Mukharji served as the twentieth Chief Justice of India from December 1989 until his death in September 1990, becoming only the second Chief Justice of India to die in office. He joined the Calcutta High Court in 1968 and the Supreme Court in 1983, authoring 315 judgments across 597 benches, including work on the Bhopal gas disaster litigation, and he emphasized that judges are subject to the rule of law like any other citizen.
