Ruy Barbosa de Oliveira (1849 to 1923), also known as Rui Barbosa, was a Brazilian politician, writer, jurist, philologist, journalist and diplomat. He was a prominent advocate for civil liberties and for the abolition of slavery, represented Brazil at the Second Hague Peace Conference, and later argued for Brazil to join the Allied side in the First World War. He was a founding member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters and served as its president from 1908 to 1919. He ran for the Brazilian presidency several times without success and spent a period in exile during the presidency of Floriano Peixoto.
